Quintana Roo, Mexico — Authorities have confirmed that a dry law will be enforced across Quintana Roo on Sunday, June 1, 2025, in connection with the historic elections for the Judicial Power. The measure, aimed at ensuring a peaceful and orderly voting process, will prohibit the sale, distribution, and consumption of alcoholic beverages throughout the state.

Strict Prohibition During Election Period

The ban will take effect at the first minute of Saturday, May 31, and remain in place until the last minute of Sunday, June 1. This marks the first time in Mexico’s history that citizens will directly elect officials responsible for applying the law, a milestone for the country’s democracy.

Authorities emphasize that the dry law is intended to prevent disturbances, altercations, or accidents related to alcohol consumption during the electoral process. Businesses across the state are required to inform customers of the restriction to ensure compliance.

Purpose of the Dry Law

The dry law is a legal measure that temporarily prohibits the sale and, in some cases, consumption of alcoholic beverages during specific periods. Its primary objective is to maintain public order, prevent violence, and reduce traffic accidents, particularly during elections, national celebrations, or large-scale events.

In electoral contexts, the law seeks to foster a calm and reflective environment, ensuring citizens can exercise their voting rights responsibly and safely. It also safeguards the integrity of the democratic process by minimizing the risk of alcohol-related disruptions or undue influence.

The Role of the Judicial Power

The Judicial Power is one of the three branches of government, alongside the Executive and Legislative branches. Its primary function is to impart justice impartially and independently by interpreting and applying laws to resolve legal disputes.

Through courts and judges, the Judicial Power upholds human rights, legality, and the rule of law. It serves as an arbiter in legal conflicts and ensures compliance with regulations. Additionally, it has the authority to declare laws or acts unconstitutional if they violate the Constitution.

The independence of the Judicial Power is crucial in preventing abuses of authority and protecting citizens’ freedoms. In many countries, it includes various judicial bodies, ranging from local courts to supreme or constitutional courts, which serve as the highest judicial authorities.

Ensuring a Smooth Electoral Process

The implementation of the dry law underscores the government’s commitment to a secure and orderly election. While the measure may face criticism for impacting businesses and limiting personal freedoms, proponents argue that its temporary nature serves the broader public interest by maintaining social stability during critical events.

Residents of Quintana Roo are urged to stay informed and adhere to the regulations to facilitate a successful and peaceful voting process.
