A driver experienced a frightening moment on Thursday night when he lost control of his vehicle after swerving to avoid a pothole on the Tulum-Boca Paila highway. His vehicle ended up on its side, but thankfully, no one was injured and no other vehicles were involved.
The incident occurred just after 10 p.m. Local hotel workers were the first to report the accident, calling 911 and alerting them to the situation around kilometer 6.5. Traffic officers were immediately dispatched to the scene.
The driver was in a gray Nissan Xtrail, with license plate UTL-277-L. He was traveling from west to east on the highway when he lost control due to excessive speed while trying to avoid a pothole. This sudden maneuver caused his vehicle to flip onto its side.
Quick-thinking eyewitnesses and passers-by worked together to right the vehicle. The driver was able to walk away from the accident unharmed, and no damage was reported to other vehicles or pedestrians in the area.
Upon arriving at the scene, traffic officers determined that the primary cause of the accident was the driver's excessive speed when he encountered the pothole. He was reprimanded on the spot for his reckless driving.
In response to the incident, local authorities have issued a warning to all drivers. They're urging people to drive cautiously and adhere to speed limits, particularly in areas known to have potholes or other road irregularities.
