Cancún, Mexico — Approximately 120 Mexican and foreign children and adolescents will spend Christmas in one of the assistance homes operated by the DIF (Integral Family Development) system in Benito Juárez municipality, according to Marisol Sendo Rodríguez, head of the department.
“As of today, we have 100 girls, boys, and adolescents in the Temporary Assistance Home (CAT), and in the migrant home, I have 20 housed today,” she detailed. “We only have children from Honduras, Guatemala, and Russia remaining under our care.”
Regarding the minors in the CAT, the official stated that most children there are victims of some crime, primarily domestic violence.
She indicated that the minors remain there until the legal situation of their parents or guardians is resolved, or until a support network is located where they can be sent, with most being relatives.
In the case of migrant minors, she said they stay in the assistance home until immigration authorities determine their status, although in most cases they are sent back to their country after a support network is located.
Sendo Rodríguez noted that, unlike on other occasions, there are currently no adults being cared for in this center, as all are minors who were traveling through the country.
