Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Despite a low season that is hitting the tourism sector hard, the National Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Services (Canaco-Servytur) reported that between 60 and 70 new businesses are opening each month in this locality.
"Currently, around two businesses are still opening per day. This speaks to the confidence investors have in the sector and the dynamism that, even in difficult times, is maintained in our city," explained Adán Toledo Lucero, president of the organization.
In an interview, the Canaco leader acknowledged that September is a complicated month due to low tourist traffic, which impacts the local economy. However, he expressed confidence that December and the first months of 2026 will represent a significant rebound for commerce.
"These are seasons that hit us, but we also know that strong months are coming, like December, January, and February, which will allow us to recover sales," he stated.
As part of the strategies to incentivize consumption, he highlighted the recent launch of the "Viernes Muy Mexicano" program, promoted at a national level, with the participation of more than 23,300 businesses in its first edition.
He said this scheme aims for family-owned businesses to launch special promotions on the last Friday of each month. Toledo Lucero affirmed that the initiative is here to stay.
"What is being sought is for family businesses to be able to offer a package or a promotion different from other days, so that people get to know them, visit them, and recommend their products," he said.
Likewise, he announced that preparations are already underway for the 2025 edition of the "Buen Fin," which will be held from November 13 to 17, with one additional day compared to previous years.
"It is a program that has been strengthened for over 13 years, where consumers can take advantage of real discounts supervised by Profeco and businesses manage to liquidate leftover merchandise," he indicated.
The business leader called on local merchants to register for both initiatives, as they represent opportunities to attract customers and keep the economy of Playa del Carmen circulating, especially at the close of a complicated year marked by one of the most critical seasons for tourism.
