Playa del Carmen, Mexico — At approximately 7:39 p.m. on Tuesday, emergency responders attended to a citizen’s report in the Playacar Phase 2 subdivision, specifically at the intersection of Paseo Cobá and Paseo Uxmal, following the collision of a deer with a vehicle.
Incident Details
Officers from the Directorate of Traffic and Roadways, along with the Tourist Police Directorate, arrived at the scene and spoke with a witness. The witness stated that the driver of a gray Volkswagen Classic was traveling at low speed when a deer suddenly crossed the road and was struck by the vehicle.
The witness expressed concern for the animal’s condition and requested appropriate measures, noting that deer are an at-risk species. The injured deer was transported for medical evaluation by a specialized veterinary center.
Community and Environmental Concerns
The operational manager of the residential complex confirmed that the driver involved is an employee of a hotel in the nearby hotel zone. The manager added that the subdivision’s administration would handle the necessary procedures, as the incident occurred on private property.
Authorities have observed an increase in deer sightings on Playacar streets, as a herd native to the area continues to roam the residential zone. In April, a deer was spotted near Playacar beaches and later wandered onto Quinta Avenida, drawing public attention.
Last Wednesday, reports also surfaced regarding the destruction of a green area due to land clearing by a construction company. This recent collision highlights the disorientation of the deer herd, which previously inhabited undisturbed zones now impacted by residential development.
Calls for Conservation Measures
Local advocates emphasize that relocation is not a viable solution, as the deer instinctively return to their natural grazing and shelter areas. They urge Mexico’s Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) and municipal authorities to intervene, designating protected reserves to prevent further habitat fragmentation and ecological disruption.
