Chetumal, Quintana Roo — A strong police mobilization occurred in Chetumal on the morning of Saturday, November 22, following the discovery of a human body in an advanced state of decomposition. The discovery took place around 11:40 a.m. in a vacant lot located between Guadalupe Victoria Street and University Avenue, in an abandoned building often used as a dumping ground and makeshift shelter.
According to a preliminary report to the 911 emergency number, Municipal Public Services workers were conducting pruning and cleaning tasks in the area when, upon entering the abandoned building, they found the body of a person. Upon approaching, they confirmed it showed an advanced decomposition process and foul odors, prompting them to immediately notify the authorities.
Initial data indicate that the body may have been at the location for between five and eight days, due to the state in which it was found. Neighbors in the area mentioned that, days earlier, members of the El Perpetuo Socorro church—located right across from the lot—had reported bad odors to the authorities, but their complaint was not addressed.
Municipal police were the first to arrive at the site, although the cordoning off was carried out by Transit elements of the Secretariat of Citizen Security. Subsequently, personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office, including criminalistics experts and the Forensic Medical Service, began the body removal to transport it to their facilities and determine its identity.
Unofficially, it emerged that the victim could be a homeless person who used to stay in that area and whom neighbors had not heard from for several days. It is expected that in the coming hours, the State Attorney General’s Office will issue an official statement with confirmed information about this discovery.
