Cancún, Quintana Roo — A tourist recently captured video footage of a crocodile walking along the beaches of Cancún, an uncommon but increasingly observed occurrence due to urban expansion encroaching on the reptile’s natural habitat.
Viral Video Shows Crocodile on Shore
The video, posted by TikTok user katyrowebrown, has amassed over 680,000 views. In the clip, the crocodile is seen moving across the sand, prompting the tourist to caption the post: “And I was worried about the sharks…”
During the rainy season, rising water levels facilitate the movement of crocodiles from lagoons and mangroves toward coastal areas. Additionally, urban and tourism development has reduced their natural habitat, forcing them to seek new routes for mobility and food.
Why Are Crocodiles Appearing on Cancún Beaches?
Cancún is surrounded by lagoons and mangroves, such as the Nichupté Lagoon, which serves as a natural habitat for crocodiles, particularly the Morelet’s crocodile (Crocodylus moreletii). These reptiles can travel between connected bodies of water, especially when water levels fluctuate or when searching for prey.
The expansion of hotels and tourist developments has diminished their natural environment, pushing them into areas where they were previously unseen, including beaches and tourist zones.
While crocodiles are not typically aggressive unless provoked, sightings on beaches are no longer rare. Authorities advise reporting such encounters to Civil Protection or local environmental agencies.
