Cancún, Mexico — The body of a crew member who went missing after jumping into the sea to seek help was found dead on Wednesday morning in Puerto Juárez, closing the search initiated the previous night.
The discovery occurred around 7 a.m. on the shore of Puerto Juárez, near Playa del Niño, at the maritime terminal and just meters from the Mandinga restaurant. An alert was sent to the 911 emergency number, reporting a drowned person. Municipal Police officers and paramedics from Civil Protection arrived at the scene but could only confirm that the man showed no vital signs, leading to the area being cordoned off.
As reported the night before, five crew members were stranded without the possibility of reaching the coast or contacting another vessel about three kilometers from Playa Las Perlas. In desperation, one of them decided to jump into the sea to try to reach land and call for help for his companions.
Around 8:30 p.m., elements of the Navy and lifeguards from Civil Protection detected a light in the distance and approached. There, they located the stranded boat with four people still on board, who were rescued with the support of another maritime unit. At that time, it was confirmed that a fifth crew member had jumped into the sea minutes earlier and had not returned, prompting the activation of a search operation.
Unfortunately, this morning his body washed ashore in the area of the Mandinga restaurant, thus concluding the search that began last night.
Forensic experts from the State Attorney General’s Office attended to carry out the body removal and transport it to the Forensic Medical Service, where the legally required autopsy will be performed. Authorities continue with the identification process and the compilation of the corresponding case file.
