Cozumel, Mexico — The fourth edition of the MAYANMAN Cozumel triathlon is set to draw 500 participants, combining athletic challenges with elements of Mayan culture to celebrate the island’s heritage and promote healthy living. The event, scheduled for August 3, 2025, will take place at Chankanaab Park, a natural setting that enhances the competition’s international appeal.
Expanding Event Formats to Broaden Participation
Genaro Gómez Montiel, the event’s organizer, announced that this year’s MAYANMAN will introduce a duathlon—a race combining running and cycling—to accommodate athletes who do not swim but remain enthusiastic about high-endurance competitions.
The triathlon will retain its traditional formats, including:
- Half-Distance: 1.9 km swim, 90 km cycling, and 21.1 km run.
- Super Sprint: 400 m swim, 10 km cycling, and 2.5 km run.
- Sprint: 750 m swim, 20 km cycling, and 5 km run.
- Olympic Distance: 1.5 km swim, 40 km cycling, and 10 km run.
Participants are expected from Mexico, the United States, Canada, and several South American countries, with a gender distribution of 60% men and 40% women.
Boosting Cozumel’s Sports Tourism Profile
María Fernanda Vargas González, Second Councilor and Chair of the Tourism Commission, emphasized the event’s role in reinforcing Cozumel as a premier sports destination. The island’s packed calendar includes the OceanMan in August, followed by the IRONMAN 70.3, ASTRI, Gran Fondo Nueva York Cozumel, and Full IRONMAN, extending through November.
Juanita Alonso Marrufo, Director of the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation, highlighted the economic benefits of these events during the island’s low season, providing vital revenue for local businesses.
The MAYANMAN triathlon continues to merge athletic excellence with cultural pride, positioning Cozumel as a hub for sustainable and competitive sports tourism.
