Cozumel’s Huellas de Conciencia Blends Meditation and Conservation

Participants in the Huellas de Conciencia program at Punta Sur Ecotourism Park in Cozumel

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) held the first edition of the year of the Huellas de Conciencia program, an integral experience developed at the Punta Sur Ecotourism Park.

The experience fuses personal well-being with environmental action, and this occasion brought together both community members and academics and students specializing in nature and environmental sustainability.

The initiative aims to strengthen the bond between people and their natural environment through meditation, mindfulness, environmental education, and the restoration of strategic ecosystems for the island, establishing itself as a meeting space between community and academic knowledge.

The day began at the seashore with a meditation session guided by teacher Luis Miguel Pérez, who led participants through an exercise of introspection and full awareness in direct contact with nature.

Participants planted beach lilies (Hymenocallis littoralis) as part of the coastal dune restoration strategy at Punta Sur, and as part of the Master’s in Ecological Restoration by Colombian student Carolyn Castañeda.

Subsequently, at the X’tacún lagoon viewpoint, there was a talk on the importance of wetlands, where the role of mangroves as a natural barrier against meteorological phenomena, habitat, and reservoir for numerous marine species was explained.

The experience continued with a mangrove ecosystem restoration session, led by the director of the Punta Sur Ecotourism Park, Jesús Benavides, who highlighted the relevance of linking personal well-being with conservation actions.

The event also featured a visit by renowned nature photographer Fernando O’Farrill, winner of the world wildlife photography contest, whose presence enriched the experience by sharing a sensitive and artistic perspective on the importance of participating in the preservation of ecosystems and wildlife.

The director of the FPMC, Juanita Alonso, said that with this type of initiative, the commitment to environmental education, the conservation of natural resources, and the construction of more conscious and participatory people is reaffirmed.

All this positions Huellas de Conciencia as a program that promotes sustainability, community well-being, and the protection of Cozumel’s natural heritage.
