Cozumel Transit Authority Cracks Down on Drunk Driving with Hotel Zone Checkpoints

A traffic officer with a yellow reflective vest labeled 'TRANSITO Y VIALIDAD DE COZUMEL' monitors motorcyclists on a busy street at night, with emergency vehicle lights visible in the background.

The Transit and Traffic authorities in Cozumel have announced plans to increase their operations, particularly during the holiday season. Deputy Director of Transit, Telly Caamal Hau, has revealed that security checkpoints will be set up at strategic locations across the island. These will include entrances to hotel areas and the eastern zone of the island.

The main goal of these checkpoints is to detect and deter intoxicated individuals, particularly at night, from accessing certain parts of Cozumel. This initiative aims to prevent accidents both in urban areas and in the eastern zone, where there is limited phone signal, making it a potentially dangerous area, especially at night.

The number of checkpoints will be increased and will include breathalyzer tests. If an individual is found to have consumed alcohol, they will be taken to a medical professional to determine their level of intoxication.

Checkpoints will be set up not only at night but also at random times throughout the day. This is part of a wider strategy to increase surveillance on the streets and avenues of the island, with the ultimate goal of reducing alcohol-related accidents during the holiday season.

In October alone, there were more than 38 alcohol-related accidents recorded on the island, with 18 people fined for driving under the influence of alcohol. Five individuals were also detained in municipal police holding cells.

Telly Caamal Hau also noted that traditionally, many locals head to the eastern zone of the island to watch the first sunrise of the year. Additional checkpoints will be set up during this period to regulate traffic and prevent intoxicated drivers or those carrying alcoholic beverages from accessing the area.
