Cozumel Taxi Union Seeks 30% Fare Increase Amid Rising Costs

Jorge Basto, general secretary of the Cozumel taxi union, speaking about fare increases

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The Cozumel taxi union has formally requested a 30% fare increase from authorities, citing rising vehicle costs and rates that have remained unchanged for years.

Jorge Basto, the union’s general secretary, announced that the proposal was submitted to officials for approval. He explained that the adjustment responds to increased vehicle supply expenses and the fact that current fares, which range from 50 to 70 pesos in the city center, have not been modified in several years.

Regarding union regularization, Basto detailed that between March and April, they expect to finalize the conversion of permits to concessions to provide greater legal certainty for drivers.

He indicated that with the integration of 250 pending spots, the union’s registry would reach a total of 1,075 concessionaires.

On the operation of mototaxis on the island, Basto noted that while there were initially no issues with a limit of 400 units, the service currently continues to operate irregularly and could count up to 480 units.
