Cozumel, Mexico — The island of Cozumel hosted one of the most significant international sporting events, welcoming 2,078 triathletes from 81 countries, including nearly 100 professional athletes. Participants, along with age-group competitors, tackled the full Ironman challenge, which involved swimming 3.8 kilometers in open water, cycling 180 kilometers, and completing a 42.2-kilometer marathon.
Mexico, the United States, Canada, Germany, and Brazil stood out as the nations with the highest representation, highlighting the diversity of participants and reinforcing Cozumel’s status as a world-class sports destination. The competition attracted athletes from various continents, strengthening the island’s international profile and its ability to host large-scale events.
In the elite men’s category, French athlete Arthur Horseau claimed first place with a time of 7 hours, 48 minutes, and 18 seconds, setting a pace that secured him the top spot on the podium. The second position went to Almog Elazary, who recorded 7 hours, 52 minutes, and 38 seconds, while third place was taken by Sebastian Norberto with a time of 7 hours, 52 minutes, and 52 seconds. In the elite women’s category, Austrian athlete Lisa Perterer achieved first place by stopping the clock at 8 hours, 29 minutes, and 29 seconds; second place was awarded to Sara Svensk with 8 hours, 50 minutes, and 44 seconds, and third place to Marta Lagownik, who finished the event in 8 hours, 53 minutes, and 12 seconds.
Beyond the sporting results, the event’s impact was evident in the local economy. According to estimates from the Municipal Tourism Director, Elías Farah Ceh, hotel occupancy during the weekend exceeded 80 percent, demonstrating the high demand generated by the arrival of athletes, companions, and visitors.
The competition brought together over 2,000 participants, solidifying the island’s international projection. Additionally, the economic spillover was calculated at more than 100 million pesos, a figure that confirms the importance of such competitions for boosting tourism and commerce on the island, particularly during low tourist seasons and at the start of the high season.
The execution of this sporting event reaffirms Cozumel’s organizational capacity and its appeal as an international destination, combining high-performance sports with tangible benefits for the community and the local tourism industry, earning it the nickname “Island of Sport.”
