Cozumel Seeks Volunteers for Coral Reef Restoration at Chankanaab Park

Volunteers participating in coral reef restoration activities at Chankanaab Natural Park in Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel, Mexico — The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) has launched a public call for volunteers to participate in ongoing coral maintenance activities at Chankanaab Natural Park, aiming to preserve the Mexican Caribbean’s marine biodiversity and protect one of the country’s most important ecosystems.

The initiative, organized through the Conservation and Environmental Education Center (CCEA), seeks to actively involve local community members and environmentally committed visitors in efforts to restore coral reefs, which serve as natural barriers against climate phenomena and pillars of sustainable tourism on the island.

Environmental authorities emphasized that reef conservation cannot be achieved solely through institutional efforts but requires social responsibility, particularly amid threats like climate change, rising sea temperatures, and algae proliferation.

The volunteer program allows citizens to participate directly in restoration actions while promoting environmental education and awareness about the fragility of marine ecosystems.

Schedule and Meeting Point

Coral maintenance activities occur continuously and in an organized manner, enabling monitoring of the growth and recovery of treated corals.

  • Day: Every Tuesday
  • Time: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Meeting point: Conservation and Environmental Education Center (CCEA), Chankanaab Park

From this location, teams depart for assigned work zones under the supervision of specialized personnel.

Volunteer Requirements

Since the work takes place underwater, the FPMC established basic safety requirements to protect both participants and the ecosystem.

  • Must know how to swim
  • Must have good buoyancy to avoid accidental damage to coral structures

These criteria ensure activities proceed safely and responsibly.

Volunteer Tasks

During the sessions, participants collaborate on fundamental actions for coral survival, including:

  • Cleaning coral structures
  • Removing algae and sediments that impede growth
  • Monitoring developing coral fragments
  • Assisting with maintenance of marine nurseries

These tasks increase coral survival rates and contribute to reef recovery against the effects of global warming.

Registration and Contact

Those interested in joining this environmental effort must register in advance to organize work groups.

The FPMC reiterated that citizen participation is key to ensuring healthier oceans and conserving Cozumel’s natural heritage.
