Cozumel, Q. Roo — The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) concluded its 2025 Sea Turtle Protection Program with the "Hatchlings and Sunsets" event at the Punta Sur turtle camp, an activity that saw community participation in conservation efforts for the island's emblematic species.

The season, which officially began with the first nest on April 18, registered a total of 1,037 nests at the Punta Sur Turtle Camp. Of these, 904 corresponded to the Chelonia mydas (green turtle) and 133 to the Caretta caretta (loggerhead turtle).

These figures reflect FPMC's commitment to the protection of species at risk and to the care of the island's natural heritage, stated the director of Conservation and Environmental Education (CEA), Rafael Chacón Díaz.

As part of the annual closing event, attendees participated in a beach cleanup, reinforcing the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems for the development of wildlife. They also received an informative talk on the ecological relevance of sea turtles and the need to strengthen actions for their conservation.

During the final day of the season, participants witnessed the release of 420 hatchlings from the last green turtle nests into the sea. The activity provided a close-up look at the scientific, technical, and environmental work carried out for months by the CEA staff to favor the survival of the species.

The camp's technical manager, Ricardo Peralta, recognized and thanked the work of the volunteers who participated in the monitoring, marking, and safeguarding of the nests, highlighting the collective commitment to safeguarding Cozumel's biodiversity.

To conclude, the general director of the FPMC, Juanita Alonso, emphasized that the conservation programs are part of the institution's commitment to the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo, which is oriented toward strengthening the protection of natural heritage and community participation.
