Cozumel’s NaturaIsla Program Connects Community With Island Biodiversity

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) hosted the second edition of its NaturaIsla program this weekend, bringing residents closer to the island’s biodiversity through educational activities near the San Gervasio archaeological zone.

The program, titled “Open Your Eyes to Nature,” attracted members of the Youth for Conservation group and other citizens interested in learning about Cozumel’s ecosystems and the importance of preserving its natural wealth.

Rafael Chacón, head of the Conservation and Environmental Education Department, led the event and emphasized that direct contact with nature helps people better understand ecosystem health and each species’ role in environmental balance.

Participants learned about the ecosystem services birds provide, including insect control, seed dispersal, and maintenance of the island’s characteristic natural habitats.

The program incorporated technology with a mobile app connected to specialized microphones that identified birds through their songs, along with binoculars for observing various flora and fauna species in their natural environment.

Sightings included wild birds, butterflies, bats, and Cozumel’s native coatí.
