Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Mayor José Luis Chacón Méndez has delivered on a campaign promise by rehabilitating the access road to Laguna Ciega, a project that members of the Isla de la Pasión fishing cooperative had sought for more than 20 years.
Speaking at the dock near the site, Chacón told cooperative members that their long-standing request had become a reality. He credited the achievement to persistent efforts with the federal Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp), and the Federal Attorney’s Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa), which granted the necessary permits for the roadwork using sascab material while respecting the natural surroundings.
“Today we have repaired the entire road to Isla de la Pasión. Now you can travel safely, carry your work tools, bring in your catch, and return home with peace of mind to support your families,” Chacón said.
The rehabilitation covers 1.8 kilometers of unpaved road to Laguna Ciega, without altering the existing road’s length or width, ensuring conservation of the natural environment.
The mayor also announced that the municipal government has secured administrative control of the road, allowing for ongoing maintenance as needed. He added that the result came from persistent trips to Mexico City to knock on the right doors, and that he plans to invite the fishermen to a future meeting with state authorities to continue pushing for a proper facility for their cooperative.
Chacón said the municipality is coordinating with the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo), the Public Security and Traffic Department, and the fishing cooperative itself to monitor proper use of the road and preserve its condition.
Enrique Tec Díaz, president of the Isla de la Pasión fishing cooperative, expressed gratitude: “Thank you very much, Mr. Mayor. This is something we have been waiting for for 20 years — to have the road to our workplace fixed. You are a true mayor who keeps his word.”
Treasurer Jorge Armín Castillo Quiam also thanked the mayor, saying: “Years ago we tried with other administrations. Today we have a safe road to come and go. Thank you very much, Mr. Mayor.”
