PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Quintana Roo — A Cometra security guard was seriously injured Monday afternoon after armed assailants attacked a cash transport crew in the Ejido neighborhood of Playa del Carmen, according to preliminary reports.
The robbery occurred on Calle 100 near Calle 30, outside Cometra facilities, while private security guards were reportedly carrying out routine cash loading and unloading duties.
According to early accounts from authorities and witnesses at the scene, the guards were intercepted by a group of armed men who opened fire during the assault. One security officer was struck by multiple bullets and was left seriously injured on the pavement.
Emergency calls reporting gunfire were made to 911, and paramedics arrived to provide first aid. The injured guard was taken to a local hospital, where his condition was reported as serious.
Municipal police and members of the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana cordoned off the area and launched a search operation for the suspects. No arrests had been reported at the time of the initial reports.
Preliminary information from sources close to the investigation indicated that the assailants may have escaped with more than 3 million pesos, though authorities had not yet confirmed the final amount.
Investigators from the Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office also arrived at the scene, along with forensic personnel, to collect evidence, interview witnesses and review possible surveillance video from nearby businesses or security cameras.
The attack has raised concern in Playa del Carmen because of both the level of violence used and the apparent planning involved in targeting a cash transport operation in broad daylight.
Authorities are expected to release more details as the investigation progresses. For now, the case remains under investigation, and the amount stolen, the number of attackers and their identities have not been officially confirmed.
