Cozumel celebrated with pride and emotion its cultural, dance, musical, and gastronomic richness during the 176th Anniversary of the Decree of Creation of the Pueblo de San Miguel, reaffirming its greatness as a Pueblo Mágico and as a territory where traditions are preserved and strengthened. The island, recognized for its invaluable heritage, experienced a special night dedicated to local talent.
As part of the evening, the Gastronomic, Artisanal, and Photographic Exhibition “Atardeceres de Cozumel” was held, where recognitions were given to Telmo Alberto Villanueva Pool, Martín Candelario Dzul Canto, and Laura Cochran for their outstanding participation in the photographic exhibition that captured, through their lenses, the most emblematic postcards of the island’s sunsets. Their images allowed the public to enjoy the beauty that distinguishes Cozumel today on its anniversary.
During the event, it was emphasized that this celebration is a call to unity and transformation, recalling that art and culture are fundamental pillars of social development. The essence of these activities reflects the firm commitment to the well-being of the community, the preservation of roots, and the strengthening of the identity that characterizes the people of Cozumel.
Representing Municipal President José Luis Chacón Méndez, the Director of Human Resources, Leisa Herrera, delivered a message of recognition to the community. “Today we honor the rich history and unique identity that distinguish our island. This anniversary invites us to value the legacy built by generations with effort, pride, and love for their land,” she expressed. She also highlighted the work of local artists who, with their sensitivity, strengthen collective memory and project a future full of unity and hope.
Herrera especially thanked the participating photographers, underlining that Cozumel’s sunsets have become an icon admired worldwide. “These unique postcards of our island are part of what makes it vibrant, prosperous, and full of life,” she said. The municipal administration thus reaffirmed its commitment to promoting activities that strengthen cultural identity and the well-being of families.
For her part, Cristina Santana, Deputy Director of Culture, highlighted in her speech the importance of dance, music, and gastronomy as essential elements in the construction of Cozumel’s heritage. She noted that the community has known how to preserve and transmit its traditions, turning them into a source of pride and unity. She also recognized the grandparents and bearers of historical memory, who with their stories keep the cultural essence of the island alive.
Cristina Santana thanked all the people who have contributed to keeping Cozumel’s culture alive, reaffirming that their legacy will endure in future generations. “Cozumel is an example of how identity and tradition strengthen a people. Happy anniversary to all who make this island their home and way of life!” she concluded.
The celebration closed with the musical talent of the ensemble “Corazón Caribe” and the Cozumel Symphony, who delighted the audience with emotional interpretations of emblematic songs such as Luna de Cozumel, Reina del Mar, Azul increíble, Del Cedral yo soy Pompi, Mi lindo Cozumel, among others, putting the perfect touch on a night dedicated to Cozumel pride and culture.
