Cozumel, Mexico — In a move to enhance Cozumel’s competitiveness as a world-class tourist destination, municipal president José Luis Chacón Méndez has activated free public Wi-Fi along Avenida Rafael E. Melgar. The service, installed by telecommunications company Gigmax, will provide internet access to both residents and visitors from the airport boulevard to Puerta Maya.

A Step Toward Connectivity and Modernization

During the activation ceremony at Benito Juárez Park, Chacón Méndez emphasized the project’s role in fostering a connected and inclusive community.

"Today, we take a firm step toward building a connected, modern, and inclusive Cozumel—a place where technology serves everyone," he stated. "This initiative aims to improve the quality of life for our families while enhancing the experience for visitors, strengthening our tourism, social, and technological development."

Martín Trozzo Francese, director of Gigmax, described the occasion as historic for Cozumel, crediting the municipal president for prioritizing public access to essential digital services.

Technical Details and Accessibility

The newly installed fiber-optic network can support up to 12,000 simultaneous connections, offering speeds of 25 Mbps per device. Users can connect in two ways:

  1. Scanning QR codes posted at designated access points along the avenue.
  2. Selecting the Gigmax network from their device’s Wi-Fi settings and completing a brief registration form.

The registration process collects anonymized data, such as whether users are locals or tourists, their origin, and how they arrived on the island.

Verification and Official Support

Following the announcement, Chacón Méndez conducted an inspection of the newly activated service, accompanied by Gigmax co-founder Mark Carney, municipal regidor María Fernanda Vargas González, subdirector of Tourism José Elías Farah Ceh, and Cozumel’s director of Municipal Systems José Vázquez Pech.

The project underscores Cozumel’s commitment to technological advancement and improved public services as part of its broader strategy to remain a leading global tourist destination.
