Othón P. Blanco, Quintana Roo — The Coxsackie virus is present in at least 43 basic-level schools, including preschools and primary schools in Quintana Roo, with the Secretary of Education confirming 184 cases.
This virus belongs to a group of enteroviruses and primarily inhabits the human digestive system. It spreads easily from person to person through contact with nasal secretions, saliva, feces, or contaminated surfaces.
In response, educational authorities have implemented various health protocols and isolated infected minors to prevent the spread of the disease, also known as hand, foot, and mouth disease.
Quintana Roo’s Secretary of Education, Elda Xix Euán, specified that the cases are distributed as 92 infections in 20 preschools and another 92 in 23 primary schools; however, no schools have been closed, but classes have been suspended preventively in some groups to avoid the spread of the virus.
Additionally, health measures are being reapplied in the schools, such as maintaining safe distancing and the permanent use of antibacterial gel.
The Coxsackie virus has symptoms including fever and lesions in the mouth, hands, and feet; moreover, it is highly contagious, to the extent that it can be transmitted with a single touch.
