Mexico — Costco Wholesale’s announcement of a mass closure on November 27th caused concern among members after going viral on social media. The suspension is related to Thanksgiving Day, an official holiday in the United States.
The chain clarified that this closure does not affect Mexico, as it only applies to stores in the United States and Puerto Rico. Mexican stores will operate on their regular schedules.
Costco also informed that, although stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico will be physically closed, members will be able to continue shopping through their web platform during those 24 hours.
What Happens in Mexico and Other Countries
Although Costco has a presence in 14 countries, the closure for Thanksgiving Day applies exclusively to U.S. and Puerto Rican territory. This suspension does not extend to Mexico or the rest of its international markets.
In Mexico, Costco only has one official closure per year, corresponding to Easter Sunday, considered a rest day. The rest of the year it operates without interruptions.
The company also reiterated that its employees in Mexico have full benefits, triple pay on mandatory holidays, and a period of paid vacations from the first year of employment.
Why Costco Closes in the United States
Costco informed that the November 27th closure is part of its annual holiday calendar in the United States. These suspensions are applied on dates considered official rest days.
In total, the chain closes its doors seven times per year in the United States, respecting days such as New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, and Independence Day.
Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas are also included, allowing its employees to enjoy family time.
