Cancún. The convention and meetings industry has consolidated its importance as one of Cancún’s main economic engines, generating over $700 million in economic impact this year, according to Yahir López, president of the Alianza Punta Cancún.

The Economic Impact is High for the Destination

He detailed that during this year, the Alianza Punta Cancún managed a total of 18 conventions, which brought together 143,000 attendees, generating just over $709 million in economic impact for the entire destination. On average, he explained, this type of event represents a high economic impact, as it involves visitors with greater purchasing power and longer stays.

As part of the strategies to maintain and strengthen the capture of this segment, López noted that work is underway to renew the CETIFARMA certification, focused on the pharmaceutical industry, one of the main markets for Cancún due to the holding of medical conventions.

He also indicated that collaboration is maintained with the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), with the goal of internationalizing this practice and expanding opportunities to attract more world-class conventions.

Events Booked Through 2031

The president of the Alianza Punta Cancún emphasized that the organization has advanced firmly in attracting international conventions, to the extent that they currently already have events confirmed for the 2024-2025 periods and up to the year 2031, which provides business certainty not only for alliance members but also for the local community.

He added that this long-term projection generates economic and social benefits for the destination, including contributions and support that have been channeled to the Cancún Center Foundation, thus strengthening the positive impact of the meetings tourism sector in Cancún.
