Chespirito Statue Faces Removal Calls After Bioseries Backlash

Cancún, Mexico — A new controversy has emerged following the release of Episode 7 of the biographical series Chespirito: Sin Querer Queriendo, with social media users now calling for the removal of a statue honoring comedian Roberto Gómez Bolaños, known as Chespirito, in Cancún. The debate mirrors recent backlash against a statue of his longtime partner, Florinda Meza, in Zacatecas.

Social Media Sparks Debate

The uproar began when a Twitter user, Carlos Burrón (@CBuburron), posted a message stating, "You're next, Chespirito statue in Cancún," implying that the monument should be taken down in response to revelations in the bioseries. While many users responded with humor, the post reignited discussions about the legacies of both Chespirito and Meza.

The controversy follows a planned protest in Juchipila, Zacatecas, where residents demand the removal of Meza's statue, erected in 2019 to honor her character Doña Florinda. A Facebook event titled "Everyone to Remove Florinda’s Sculpture," scheduled for July 24, has drawn over 20,000 interested users and 3,100 confirmed attendees. Organizers describe the statue as "an embarrassment" and claim its presence "burns the town."

Chespirito’s Cancún Tribute

The bust of Roberto Gómez Bolaños stands on Avenida Tulum in Cancún, unveiled on February 22, 2016, two years after his death. The ceremony, led by then-mayor Paul Carrillo de Cáceres, was part of a cultural initiative by the Benito Juárez municipality. Florinda Meza attended the event and delivered an emotional speech, recalling Chespirito’s love for the city.

"Roberto always said Cancún was a paradise, and I say it too… It’s moving that they chose to place this bust here, where he spent his last three years," Meza said during the unveiling.

No Official Response Yet

As of now, Cancún authorities have not addressed the online calls for the statue’s removal, nor has a physical protest been organized, unlike the planned demonstration in Zacatecas. The bioseries continues to fuel debate as new episodes reveal details about Chespirito’s life and relationships.

The statue remains a popular attraction for visitors, while the broader discussion reflects ongoing tensions surrounding public monuments and cultural memory in Mexico.
