Cold Fronts Force Repeated Closures of Chiquilá Port, Impacting Local Fishing Economy

Chiquilá, Mexico — Persistent cold fronts this year have forced repeated closures of the port in Chiquilá, severely impacting the local fishing economy, according to Pedro León Ramírez, president of the El Porvenir fishing cooperative.

Ramírez said fishing for scale fish has failed to recover since the start of the year because weather conditions have not been favorable for going out to sea. Port closures, ordered for safety reasons, have limited fishing days and significantly reduced income for families who depend on this activity.

“Unfortunately we haven’t had good seasons; the cold fronts have been constant and haven’t allowed us to work normally. Every closure represents a hard blow for fishermen,” Ramírez stated.

He detailed that the cold front over the past weekend was particularly intense, accompanied by low temperatures and strong winds, forcing the port to remain closed to avoid risks to vessels and crew.

The cooperative president called on authorities to maintain monitoring of weather conditions and consider support for fishermen facing difficult economic situations due to the lack of maritime activity.
