Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on Saturday that the Maya cargo train, a project under construction in southeastern Mexico, will help lower gasoline prices in the region.
During a public event in Quintana Roo, Sheinbaum mentioned that she would visit the Maya cargo train construction site later that day, a project she promised to expand last year during her presidential campaign.
“We committed, for example, that the Maya Train would not only be for passengers but also for cargo. It is progressing, and this afternoon we are going to visit the construction site,” she said.
“What is that for? So that there can be more distribution of gasoline and the price of gasoline decreases here in the southeast of the country,” the president added.
Sheinbaum’s remarks were made during the delivery of housing and the release of mortgages and deeds in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo.
Construction on the Maya cargo train began in April of last year, with an initial investment of 25 billion pesos.
The Maya Train is a 1,553-kilometer rail project prioritized by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for the five southeastern states: Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, and Yucatán.
With the expansion, the railway will also connect with the Interoceanic Corridor train, another López Obrador project that links the Pacific and Atlantic via a train and industrial corridor, which Mexico aims to offer as an alternative to the Panama Canal.
Regarding gasoline prices, in August of last year, Sheinbaum reported the renewal of an agreement with the gasoline sector to maintain the cap of 24 pesos per liter for magna gasoline.
