Governor Claudia Sheinbaum has pledged to investigate a complaint made by well-known influencer Luis Arturo Villar, also known as Luisito Comunica, about taxi fares in Cancún, Quintana Roo.
On January 5th, Villar shared a video expressing his frustration after being charged 100 dollars (equivalent to 2,000 Mexican pesos) for a 20-minute taxi ride from Cancún International Airport to his hotel. The video quickly went viral, sparking a widespread debate about fare practices in the taxi industry.
In response to Villar's video, the local taxi union stated that the vehicles involved were not traditional taxis, but private transport units operating under federal permits granted by Southeast Airports (ASUR).
Villar's complaint reached the attention of several authorities, including Mexico's President, Claudia Sheinbaum. During a press conference, Sheinbaum acknowledged the importance of taxi drivers' work but emphasized the necessity for charges to be in line with current regulations. "Charges must be fair," she stated.
Sheinbaum also announced that her administration would conduct an investigation into the incident to determine whether there was indeed an overcharge. She explained that public transport fares in Mexico are regulated according to the type of concession taxi drivers hold, whether at the state or federal level.
