QUINTANA ROO, Mexico — A proposed increase in public transport fares will be decided through a citizen consultation expected to take place in the coming weeks. The consultation will also consider improvements to the service and the modernization of vehicles.
In Quintana Roo, the definition of new public transport fares will be in the hands of the population through this citizen consultation. The measure emerges as part of a process to balance the need to increase travel costs with improvements in service quality, such as the renewal of vehicles and greater coverage in areas currently underserved.
The proposal contemplates a possible adjustment to a cost of 15 pesos per trip, conditional on concessionaires making a legal commitment to offer better service and on the community approving the modification.
A Broader Modernization Plan
The process is framed within a broader plan to reform and modernize the transport system, which includes evaluating the transfer of service control to the State to ensure greater legal and regulatory certainty. Additionally, work is underway to reorganize routes in Cancún and to implement electronic payment systems with discounts for transfers, aiming to increase transport coverage to within every 500 meters.
The incorporation of 18-meter articulated buses, with a capacity for 160 passengers, is also underway to optimize peak hours in frequently traveled zones. These actions are part of an effort to raise the standards of quality and efficiency in transport, a response to citizen demands and the need for a more inclusive and modernized system for the benefit of users.
