Mérida, Yucatán — The Scientific Research Center of Yucatán (CICY) has announced the first 2025 edition of its Agroecological Market, an event designed to encourage the consumption of healthy, nutritious, and locally produced foods while supporting Yucatán’s farming and artisan communities.
Supporting Sustainable Agriculture and Fair Trade
The market will take place on Wednesday, June 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., as part of a broader initiative to promote the production and consumption of foods derived from native corn varieties. The project emphasizes short supply chains and agricultural practices that prioritize biodiversity and avoid chemical inputs.
Jorge Urdapilleta Carrasco, technical lead of the ALISA Network Yucatán project, explained that the market offers more than just access to healthy, chemical-free, and locally sourced products. "It also creates spaces where producers can sell their goods at fair prices," he said.
Diverse Participation from Yucatecan Communities
Seventeen agroecological collectives from communities such as Yokdzonot Hu, Tixméhuac, Kankabdzonot, Chemax, Temozón, Xoy, and Chaksinkin will participate in the event. Attendees can expect a wide variety of products, including fruits, vegetables, seeds, and Melipona honey.
Maira Rubí Segura Campos, Director of CICY, highlighted the market’s role in bridging science and the local community. "This event helps build healthier food systems while fostering connections between producers and consumers," she said, urging the public to attend and support the vendors.
The Agroecological Market CICY underscores the institution’s commitment to sustainable agriculture and community engagement, providing a platform for small-scale producers to thrive while offering consumers access to fresh, responsibly grown food.
