New Leader Takes Over Playa Women’s Institute

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The Mayor of Playa del Carmen, Estefanía Mercado, has announced changes at the Institute for Women following the departure of Bárbara Delgado Uc as head of the decentralized municipal department. Idania Gamboa will assume the role.

In a public statement, Mayor Mercado said, "I have designated Professor Idania Gamboa as the new director of the Institute for Women of the Playa del Carmen Government. I deeply thank Bárbara Delgado for her commitment and dedication; she will continue contributing from this government to the strengthening of our municipality. We continue building a Playa del Carmen that is more just, equal, and with opportunities for all."

The feminist collective Siempre Unidas had filed for an injunction against the appointment of Bárbara Delgado in May. In August, the Ninth District Court, within case file 516/2025, ruled in favor of the collective with the protection of the federal Justice.

Legal Resolution and Implementation

The principal effect of the injunction, according to the consulted case file, was to compel a response to the plaintiffs regarding a request for the dismissal of the public servant.

The sentence states, "Having established the foregoing, in the specific case, it follows that in the document presented on the third of April, two thousand twenty-five, before the responsible authority, the plaintiff party requested a response to its petition for the dismissal of the Head of the General Directorate of the Institute for Women."

The matter was concluded on September 29, after the municipal authority provided Siempre Unidas with a response to the petition presented in April concerning the dismissal of the public servant, as the sentence from the constitutional trial was not appealed.

This new change in first-level departments joins others that have been registered primarily since the middle of the year.
