Over the weekend, the Yucatecan coast came alive with the thrilling "Chaac vs Poseidon" race. More than 500 athletes, including runners and cyclists, participated in the event, which spanned from Telchac Puerto to Progreso. The race concluded with an award ceremony on the beach of the former municipality.
The event was notable for its energy and strong local participation, as well as a significant presence of sports tourism. The cycling competition, which spanned 80 kilometers, was dominated by followers of the Mayan god "Chaac" in most categories.
In the men's open category, Jonathan Sosa claimed first place with a time of 2:04:59 hours. He was closely followed by Roger Rodriguez and Andres Medina, who also competed under the banner of "Chaac". In the over 60 category, the top spot went to Oliver Emotte, with a time of 2:09:29 hours. Meanwhile, Alberto Yañez emerged victorious in the over 40 category with a time of 2:04:58 hours.
Women also made their presence felt in the event. Rosa Ortiz, a follower of "Poseidon", clinched first place in the women's open category with a time of 2:29:15 hours. However, the followers of "Chaac" claimed most of the remaining positions, with Elizabeth Fuentes Jimenez standing out as the winner in the over 40 women's category.
In the 10-kilometer running race, Jair Pacheco Gallegos took first place in the men's category with a time of 48:36 minutes. In the women's category, Karla Martin claimed the top spot with a time of 48:48 minutes.
The event was graced by authorities such as Edmundo Alfonso Nuñez Erguera, the municipal president of Telchac Puerto, and Armin Lizama Cordova, the director of the Yucatan Institute of Sport (IDEY), who presided over the awards ceremony.
The "Chaac vs Poseidon" race was not just a celebration of sport, but also a testament to the culture and tradition of Yucatan, with followers of "Chaac" clearly dominating the event.
