Carnival 2026 in Felipe Carrillo Puerto Draws Criticism Amid Ongoing Violence and Neglect

Carnival celebrations in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo, Mexico

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Mexico — The 2026 Carnival in Felipe Carrillo Puerto has launched with official fanfare, but critics argue the colorful festivities mask deeper problems of violence, corruption, and social neglect plaguing the Maya Zone region.

Mayor Maricarmen Hernández Solís, who recently traveled to Madrid to promote the Maya Kaan community tourism project, has faced scrutiny for what some call using the Carnival as a media spectacle to divert attention from pressing local issues. The mayor has not disclosed how many European tourists the Madrid promotion might bring to what residents describe as the “hot” or troubled Maya Zone of Quintana Roo.

Behind the parade floats and concert stages, residents contend with a municipality where Yucatan state police have had to intervene to arrest alleged drug traffickers, basic services deteriorate, and public works projects remain unrealized. The criticism does not target the cultural importance of Carnival itself, but rather what opponents see as irresponsible use of public funds for festivities while serious social and economic problems go unaddressed.

“The mayor appears to use the party as a media spectacle to divert attention from real problems and the mismanagement of public resources,” wrote Enrique Tuz in a critical assessment. The article notes that while public money flows to parades and concerts, citizens wait for security, dignified employment, and quality services.

The Carnival controversy highlights ongoing tensions in southern Quintana Roo, where luxury tourism developments sometimes exist alongside areas of extreme poverty and where local violence periodically requires intervention from state authorities.
