Chetumal, Quintana Roo — A car plunged into a storm drain in the Caribe neighborhood on Monday, marking the latest in a series of similar incidents at a poorly marked intersection that residents say authorities have ignored.
The accident occurred at the crossing of Nicolás Bravo Avenue and Curacao Street, a spot that has become a hazard for drivers in the northern part of the state capital. According to initial reports, the driver swerved to avoid a collision with another vehicle, lost control, and veered into the drainage channel. The car ended up in a position that made immediate removal difficult.
Neighbors and witnesses said this is not the first time a vehicle has ended up in the drain at that location. Despite the recurring accidents, residents complained that municipal and traffic officials have failed to install warning signs, adequate lighting, or protective barriers to alert drivers to the channel’s presence and depth.
With the car partially blocking the road, bystanders and locals helped pull the vehicle out of the drain. The Othón P. Blanco municipal government has not issued any statement on the incident.
