Cancun’s hotel occupancy rate during the winter season has dipped to 78%. This decrease is attributed to factors such as insecurity, rampant theft in transport services, and inadequate infrastructure. These issues have led to a rapid deterioration of tourist destinations, including the hotel area of Cancun and Federal Highway 307.
Hotel advisors have noted an unusual situation. Many tourists who have visited Cancun, Riviera Maya, and Tulum in recent years have left disappointed due to these persistent problems. Despite several administrations’ attempts, these issues remain unresolved.
The Mexican Caribbean destinations, including Cancun and Riviera Maya, ended 2024 with a hotel demand of 85.1%. However, this figure fell short of the State Tourism Secretariat’s (Sedetur) forecast. Sedetur had estimated reaching 1.5 million visitors from mid-December to the first week of January 2025.
The Association of Hotels of Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres released a report on January 8. The report indicated that Cancun’s hotel occupancy barely reached 78%. Costa Mujeres, with 9,160 available rooms, achieved an occupancy rate of 79.1%. Meanwhile, Puerto Morelos, with 6,640 rooms, recorded an occupancy rate of 77.1%.
