Cancún Taxis Get Surveillance Cameras to Boost Tourist Safety

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Cancún is moving forward with a plan to equip its tourist and urban taxis with video surveillance cameras, part of a broader effort to strengthen safety for passengers and drivers.

Rubén Carrillo, general secretary of the Cancún Taxi Drivers Union, said 270 taxis already have the cameras installed and are being connected to the C5 control center, the city’s security monitoring hub.

The goal is to have more than 700 equipped taxis by the end of 2026, expanding video coverage along major routes and areas with heavy tourist traffic.

The cameras use artificial intelligence to improve monitoring and tracking of vehicles while they are in service, Carrillo said. A direct link to C5 will be completed once a formal agreement is signed, integrating the taxis into the city’s broader security network.

The union leader noted that the original goal was to install 250 cameras — a target already exceeded. He added that the union is still inviting taxi concessionaires and operators to join the program.

The initiative aims to give passengers and drivers greater confidence and security in Cancún, one of Mexico’s most visited tourist destinations.
