Cancún Taco Festival Aims to Revive Local Economy in Low Season

Tacos al pastor served at a traditional taquería in Cancún

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Eleven traditional taquerías will set up on Avenida Yaxchilán this weekend for “La Fiesta del Taco Cancún 2026,” an event organizers hope will revive the local economy as the restaurant sector struggles through the low season.

The festival will run Saturday, Oct. 10, and Sunday, Oct. 11, in the area known as the Zona Fundacional, or ZOFU, of Cancún.

Carlos Del Castillo, director of the “Distrito Cancún” program, recalled that a similar event was held in recent months for the cafeterias along Avenida Nader, businesses that have since enjoyed strong support from residents.

Million tons of tacos

According to a study by the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (CANIRAC), Mexicans eat roughly 22.3 million tons of tacos a year, making the dish the country’s favorite. Tacos al pastor lead national preferences at 29%, followed by carnitas at 23% and barbacoa at 21%.

Organizers said the event should appeal to Cancún families and visiting tourists alike.

Taco Social Run and family activities

The “Taco Social Run” route will offer promotions and a variety of tacos from the 11 participating local taquerías on Saturday and Sunday starting at 6 p.m.

The festival also features a stage with several performers, attractions such as a mechanical bull ride, a Mexican kermés, cultural shows and a pavilion for regional artisans.

Among the well-known establishments taking part are El Poblano, Picaña & Grill, Pescaditos, Autóctona and La Parrilla.

Del Castillo acknowledged that many people assume Avenida Yaxchilán is “dead,” but said that is not the case. More than 14 businesses operate there, most of them restaurants serving a wide range of dishes including meats, fish and seafood, buffets, pizzas and Mexican food.

“What we Cancún residents have to do is show up and spend, because in the end this is about the local economy that benefits the community,” he said.
