Cancún, Mexico — In a world where sustainable tourism is no longer optional but urgent, Cancun Sailing has positioned itself as a leader in responsible practices in the Mexican Caribbean. For over two years, the nautical company has maintained a strong partnership with Ecoliiks A.C., an environmental organization that promotes the use of "ecoladrillos" (eco-bricks) as a tool for community and ecological transformation.
What Is an Ecoladrillo and Why Does It Matter?
An ecoladrillo is a PET bottle filled with non-recyclable waste, such as plastics classified as types 5, 6, and 7, wrappers, face masks, and other discarded materials. These items, which would typically end up in landfills or polluting the ocean, are repurposed into key components of sustainable infrastructure—specifically, Ecoliiks Ecobancas (eco-benches).
Commitment from Within
What began as a collaboration between organizations has evolved into a movement within Cancun Sailing. The entire team actively participates in waste collection and the creation of ecoladrillos. A friendly competition has even emerged among catamarans to see which can contribute the most to this green initiative.
This collective effort has yielded results: Cancun Sailing has earned environmental distinctions such as the Blue Flag, recognizing its commitment to responsible waste management, recycling, and marine ecosystem protection.
Ecoliiks: From Waste to Rest
One of the most inspiring achievements of this alliance is the installation of an Ecoliiks Ecobanca at the Center for Family Care and Strengthening run by Huellas de Pan A.C. Constructed with 40 ecoladrillos produced by Cancun Sailing’s team, this bench is more than just a place to sit—it symbolizes social and environmental commitment and serves as a call to collective action.
Workshops, Forums, and Community Action
Cancun Sailing doesn’t just participate; it leads. The company has organized ecoladrillo workshops for its staff, promoted environmental dialogue through forums like the 2nd Meeting for the Mexican Caribbean, and expanded Ecoliiks’ network of environmental allies, demonstrating that sustainability is built through human connections.
The Ecoliiks Strategy is open to individuals, businesses, and institutions looking to contribute. Participants can start by creating their own ecoladrillos, sharing information, or making donations. The initiative proves that transforming waste into useful, eco-friendly infrastructure is indeed possible.
As the organization stated, “Sailing with an ecological course also means navigating toward a fairer, cleaner, and more conscious future.”
