Cancún, Mexico — Transport authorities in Cancún are relocating bus stops at the busy Plaza Las Américas shopping center to alleviate traffic congestion that affects thousands of residents and tourists daily.

The Quintana Roo State Mobility Institute (IMOVEQROO) announced the changes, citing severe bottlenecks caused by more than 40 bus routes converging at the same location. Officials said double-parking and frequent delays have prompted the overhaul.

Some adjustments have already taken effect this week, with minibuses, known locally as combis, now operating from a tunnel beneath the plaza or nearby streets. Larger buses, including routes R-1 and R-2, will move to Avenida Tulum in front of the plaza, while other urban transport will shift to Avenida Bonampak to avoid clogging main thoroughfares.

IMOVEQROO has not provided exact dates for all relocations but expects the changes to become more noticeable in the coming days or weeks. Authorities are advising commuters to consult police officers or locals for guidance on the new stop locations.

The institute aims to improve traffic flow, reduce gridlock, and enhance convenience for both passengers and drivers through the reorganization.
