Cancún Prison Theater Program Concludes Season with Inmate-Performed Nativity Play

Inmates perform a nativity play at the Cancún Social Reintegration Center as part of the Theater from Freedom program

Cancún, Mexico — A prison theater program in Cancún concluded its season on Friday with a nativity play performed by inmates for female prisoners at the city’s Social Reintegration Center.

The performance marked the fourth and final show of the “Theater from Freedom” program, run by the Benito Juárez Institute of Culture and Arts under the direction of actor and producer Daniel Canché. The previous three performances were presented to male inmates.

The play, titled “The Road to Bethlehem… Or Where Was It Again?” featured inmates taking on roles including devils, shepherds, angels, Joseph, Mary, and the Star of Bethlehem. The female audience applauded and laughed throughout the performance, which showcased participants’ stage presence, diction, and confidence.

The program has demonstrated transformative effects on participants, fostering:

  • Increased confidence and self-esteem among inmates
  • Discipline and teamwork skills
  • Mental agility and dialogue memorization
  • Community building and social cohesion within the prison

The project received support from collaborators including Juraj Fekete, choreographer Yolotzin, and Santiago Hernández, an actor from the Municipal Theater Company who served as a guest instructor.

The theater workshop will continue working with female inmates to develop a new production with original material, allowing participants to express themselves freely and experience artistic catharsis.
