Cancún’s LGBT+ Park Project Stalled Without Council Approval

Proposed Pride Park location in Cancún's Supermanzana 22

Cancún. Despite an initiative to convert the public space in Supermanzana 22 into a symbol of inclusion for Cancún’s LGBT+ community, the project has not achieved formal backing from the municipal council or concrete progress in its renaming, nearly a year after being publicly promoted.

The lack of a ruling and approval from the collegiate body keeps the official transformation of the place, currently known as Parque de los Pintores, in suspense, while debate persists about its vocation as a safe meeting site for the collective.

The Directorate of Attention to Sexual Diversity, headed by Noamhy Hermida Nieves, enthusiastically leads this effort to recover an area that already has a historical connection with the LGBT+ community.

According to the director, the objective is for the park to become a reference for inclusive recreation, where peaceful coexistence is promoted and permanent actions are carried out in defense of the rights of sexual diversity people.

Although significant physical interventions have not yet been made, the department emphasizes that the name change would be a key step to make visible and strengthen the collective’s presence in public spaces.

Since early 2025, activation activities have been implemented such as free film screenings and monthly events open to all citizens, in order to generate roots and demonstrate the site’s potential as a meeting point.

These actions, which seek to continue at the end of each month, have allowed greater influx and dialogue with the community, although the project remains in the institutional planning phase and building necessary consensus to advance in formal procedures before the Council.

So far, Pride Park exists more as an aspiration than a tangible reality: without an official name change or significant renovations, the space continues in daily use without the planned modifications.
