Cancún cleanup boosts conservation of Nichupté Lagoon System

Volunteers and officials participate in a cleanup at Tajamar Boardwalk in Cancún to protect the Nichupté Lagoon System

Cancún. As part of the Nichupté Lagoon System Saneamiento Program, the Benito Juárez Municipality carried out a Cleanup Day at the Tajamar Boardwalk, with the objective of strengthening the conservation of this strategic ecosystem through citizen participation, environmental awareness, and direct sanitation actions.

Representing Municipal President Ana Paty Peralta, the Secretary General of the Municipality, Pablo Gutiérrez Fernández, led this activity, where he recognized the commitment of the citizenry and reiterated that in Cancún, love for the city is demonstrated with actions. He highlighted that the Tajamar Boardwalk is an emblematic space for Cancún families and, at the same time, a fundamental part of the Nichupté Lagoon System, a natural treasure that protects, connects, and gives life to the municipality.

During his message, he emphasized that these cleanup days go beyond waste collection, as they represent an exercise in social co-responsibility and a bet on Cancún’s future. Likewise, he highlighted the importance of wetlands as a natural barrier against hurricanes, their role in hydrological connectivity with cenotes and aquifers, and their high carbon capture capacity, fundamental for confronting climate change.

The cleanup day is part of a permanent strategy aimed at promoting responsible habits in solid waste management and valuing the ecological and social relevance of the municipality’s urban wetlands. The Manglares de Nichupté Flora and Fauna Protection Area harbors more than 4,257 hectares of mangroves, with the four recognized species in Mexico, as well as more than 3,000 hectares of water bodies, which sustain key biodiversity for the region.

Gutiérrez Fernández specially recognized the work of the General Directorate of Ecology, headed by Fernando Haro, for its technical, operational, and coordination work to make this cleanup day possible, as well as for its permanent commitment to environmental protection and citizen participation.

Finally, he thanked the combined efforts of volunteers, municipal agencies, educational institutions, businesses, and civil organizations, reiterating that Cancún’s environmental transformation is built as a team and with the active participation of society.

With actions like this, the Benito Juárez Municipality reaffirms its commitment to climate resilience, biodiversity protection, and the care of the natural spaces that distinguish Cancún.
