Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Benito Juárez municipal government has announced a free rabies vaccination campaign for dogs and cats in Cancún, scheduled to run from March 22 to 29, 2026.

Under the slogan “Vaccinating them is an act of love,” the initiative aims to prevent rabies cases in pets and maintain Quintana Roo as an urban rabies-free zone. The vaccine will be administered free of charge by specialized personnel.

Campaign Details

The vaccination campaign will take place at the following location:

  • Dates: March 22-29, 2026
  • Hours: 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM daily
  • Location: Benito Juárez Animal Protection and Welfare Department
  • Address: Nichupté Avenue, Cancún

Requirements and Recommendations

Authorities have issued several recommendations for pet owners attending the vaccination campaign:

  • Dogs must be kept on a leash and collar at all times
  • Nervous or special-handling dogs should wear muzzles
  • Cats must be transported in carriers, ventilated boxes, or pillowcases to prevent escapes
  • Pets must be at least three months old
  • Animals should appear healthy at the time of vaccination
  • Owners should bring water to hydrate pets while waiting

Following these guidelines will help ensure a safe and orderly vaccination process while reducing stress for the animals.

Importance of Annual Rabies Vaccination

Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system and can be fatal to both animals and humans if not prevented. Annual vaccination of dogs and cats helps:

  • Prevent transmission between animals and humans
  • Protect families and communities
  • Maintain Quintana Roo’s urban rabies-free status
  • Fulfill pet owners’ health responsibilities

After vaccination, staff will provide an official vaccination certificate and tag as proof of current protection. Authorities recommend keeping this documentation, as it may be required for veterinary procedures, travel, or health control purposes.
