Cancún Inaugurates New Arts Exhibition Hall to Strengthen Cultural Identity

Mayor Ana Paty Peralta cuts the ribbon at the inauguration of the Exhibition Hall at the Cultural Arts Center in Cancún

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Mayor Ana Paty Peralta inaugurated the new Exhibition Hall at the Cultural Arts Center, marking a significant step in the city’s cultural development as part of the “Year of Identity and Culture” initiative for 2026.

The hall aims to serve as a permanent space for showcasing local visual talent, providing a venue for public engagement with contemporary art from the region. During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Mayor Peralta emphasized that reopening this forum represents efforts to enhance public spaces dedicated to artistic expression.

“Strengthening spaces like this is also betting on a city with soul, one that recognizes in its artists an authentic voice to tell who we are, where we come from, and where we want to go,” Peralta told the gathering of visual artists.

Inaugural Exhibition Features Local Artists

The opening exhibition, titled “Change and Continuity / Territory / Heritage / Identity,” presents 35 works by 25 Cancún-based artists. The collection includes 24 two-dimensional pieces and 11 three-dimensional works, spanning painting, engraving, sculpture, and installation art.

According to the mayor, the exhibition serves as more than just an aesthetic display—it represents a living narrative that engages with the collective memory of the destination, Quintana Roo’s natural environment, and contemporary artistic languages.

Cultural Strategy for 2026

The inauguration aligns with the municipal government’s declaration of 2026 as the “Year of Identity and Culture” in Benito Juárez municipality. Under this framework, officials have committed to decentralizing artistic expressions and bringing art to every corner of the municipality.

Reyna Valdivia Arceo Rosado, Secretary of Anti-Corruption and Good Government for Quintana Roo, attended the event representing Governor Mara Lezama. She highlighted that strengthening cultural spaces like this exhibition hall results from coordinated work between different levels of government and institutions.

“Culture is a powerful tool for building a more united, participatory society that is conscious of its heritage,” Valdivia Arceo Rosado stated.

Future Programming and Location

Carlos López Jiménez, director general of the Institute of Culture and Arts, noted that the reopening represents a milestone for the local cultural ecosystem. “We’re returning to the community an exhibition and mediation space specifically designed to showcase local artistic production,” he said.

López Jiménez added that the hall will not remain static but will serve as the starting point for future exhibition cycles and calls for submissions that include more visual artists, ensuring a constant and democratic flow of ideas and expressions.

The Exhibition Hall is located at Avenida Tulum, Supermanzana 20, between Liebre and Jabalí streets, forming part of the City Theater complex. This central location reinforces the area as Cancún’s cultural heart.
