Cancún Beach Recovery Project Advances with New Environmental Study

Cancún beach recovery project environmental impact assessment

Cancún, Mexico — A beach recovery project in Cancún requires a new Environmental Impact Assessment (MIA) with a cost of 20 million pesos. The architectural executive project is expected to be ready by 2026, announced municipal president Ana Paty Peralta.

The mayor stated that the municipal administration is leading the architectural executive project, which goes beyond aesthetic concerns to focus on technical sustainability. This plan not only seeks to beautify the beach area but also to consolidate modern infrastructure that prioritizes the recovery of sandy areas.

Through close coordination with the State Secretariat of the Environment (SEMA), work is underway on a complete Environmental Impact Assessment (MIA) that will allow precise interventions according to the needs of each section. This includes sand injection filling, dune creation, and placement of natural barriers to protect the coastal ecosystem.

“The MIA alone requires an investment exceeding 20 million pesos. However, for this project we have the fundamental support of the Hotel Association and the Business Coordinating Council (CCE),” Peralta explained.

The municipal president emphasized that the beaches are a heritage for all Cancún residents, noting that the destination currently enjoys beaches with zero sargassum. The commitment is to maintain this condition and supervise that the infrastructure is adequate to receive visitors from around the world in the short term, ensuring the majesty of the coast remains intact.

“The beaches belong to all Cancún residents. Currently, we enjoy beaches with zero sargassum, and our commitment is to keep them that way and supervise that the infrastructure is adequate for 2026,” the municipal authority stated.

Parallel to this project, she said that state-of-the-art surveillance towers will be installed in the coastal zone. “These spaces will be shared by the Lifeguard Corps and the Secretariat of Citizen Security, optimizing response capacity and prevention,” she explained.
