Winter Storm Cancels 117 Flights to Cancún Airport

Cancún, Mexico — After four days of a winter storm affecting all of North America, flight cancellations have reached 117 at Cancún International Airport. Yesterday alone saw 32 flight suspensions due to relentless snowfall.

According to the report from Cancún International Airport, in addition to the 117 canceled flights, there are 77 delays, affecting routes such as Dallas, Miami, San Francisco, and Montreal. Airlines prevented from flying included Frontier, Spirit, and United Airlines with one flight each, as well as Air Canada with two and another eleven from American Airlines, for a total of 16 arrival flights. Departures were also affected, with Frontier, Spirit, and United Airlines each having one flight impacted, along with Air Canada with two and another 11 from American Airlines, for a total of 16.

Roberto Cintrón, former president of the Cancún, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association, stated: “Hotels are receiving passengers whose flights are canceled or delayed for one reason or another.”

“Many of us are flexible with our policies and accept date changes. These policies can vary depending on the hotel, but we have always been characterized by supporting clients and tour operators.”

The Quintana Roo Tourism Secretariat reports that so far no tourist has requested assistance, but they keep the Guest Assist program active, through which any tourist can turn to authorities if they need support to extend their stay due to force majeure.

Last Monday, there were 27 cancellations from and to cities such as Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Dallas, Lansing, Montreal, New York, Newark, Raleigh Durham, and Toronto. Over the weekend, 58 flights ceased operations. The cities most affected at the start of the storms were Baltimore, New York, Boston, Baltimore, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Maryland, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire in the United States, as well as Toronto, Quebec, and Calgary from Canada.
