Othón P. Blanco, Quintana Roo — After enduring years of neglect, the coastal community of Calderitas has undergone a sweeping transformation with the completion of a 43-million-peso rehabilitation project. Governor Mara Lezama unveiled the revitalized area, which now features accessible walkways, new playgrounds, scenic viewpoints, and cultural landmarks designed to boost tourism and local quality of life.
A Long-Awaited Renewal
Governor Lezama emphasized that the project addresses decades of unmet demands from Calderitas’ 5,551 residents, as well as benefiting over 233,000 people in nearby Chetumal. "Calderitas finally receives what it always deserved: investment, attention, and respect," she stated during the inauguration. "This is a visible, tangible transformation—done with quality and integrity."
The Secretary of Public Works, José Lara Díaz, oversaw the construction of key amenities, including:
- Elevated wooden decks with ocean views
- A new inclusive tourist pier
- Safe railings and lookout points
- A revitalized park fountain
- Upgraded lighting and parking areas
Cultural and Ecological Enhancements
Four new lookout points, named U Tíip’il k’iin (Sunrise), now serve as both scenic attractions and educational hubs. QR codes provide information in Spanish and Maya, reinforcing regional heritage. Sculptures of jaguars, tarpon, and cinnamon hummingbirds—symbols of the area’s ecological and spiritual ties—adorn the space.
The dining district received electrical upgrades, improved walkways, and better lighting, while a 703.7-square-meter wooden plaza and public restrooms were added. Streets such as Oaxaca, Tlaxcala, and Yucatán were repaved with adocreto walkways, new lighting, native trees, and a skate park for youth.
A Message to the South
Governor Lezama framed the project as part of broader efforts to prioritize southern Quintana Roo. "This isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about changing lives," she said. "We’re sending a clear message: the south matters, and we’re here to deliver for Calderitas."
Othón P. Blanco Mayor Yensunni Martínez Hernández joined in celebrating the milestone, marking the end of what residents had long considered an era of disregard.
