Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The growing vehicular pressure in Playa del Carmen has once again highlighted the need to incorporate a bypass road in the Urban Development Program (PDU), a recurring demand given the saturation of the only highway connecting Cancún, Tulum, Puerto Aventuras, and Akumal.
Road Infrastructure is Lagging Behind
The proposal resurfaces as the municipality redefines its urban planning, following decades of accelerated growth that was not accompanied by adequate infrastructure.
The president of Coparmex Riviera Maya, Sugeiry Prieto Torres, stated that the redesign of the PDU opens an opportunity to establish alternative routes that respond to the city’s new size and dynamics. She maintained that before any construction work, it is essential to build a solid regulatory framework that allows governments to present viable and sustainable projects.
“The city has already changed, it has reached another level, so we must do what is necessary; first work on the regulatory framework, and based on that, our governments will be able to make proposals to provide solutions,” she affirmed.
Blockades Affect the Only Access Route
The business leader recalled that every blockade or incident on the federal highway exposes the region’s vulnerability, where there is no other transportation route. “It affects us directly… having only that route has impacted business owners and, of course, tourists and the general population,” she expressed.
Prieto Torres emphasized that, in addition to infrastructure, timely information is key to reducing impacts. “If we can have the information on time, we can look for some alternative routes,” she commented, reiterating that mobility must be a priority in the planning of the Riviera Maya.
