Bus and Snack Truck Collision on Tulum-Playa del Carmen Highway Leaves One Dead, 15 Injured

Akumal, Quintana Roo — A collision between a hotel worker shuttle bus and a snack delivery truck on a major highway in Quintana Roo early Tuesday morning left one woman dead and at least 15 people injured, authorities reported.

The crash occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Highway 307, the main road connecting the tourist hubs of Tulum and Playa del Carmen, near the Akumal bridge. Initial reports indicate the delivery truck, operated by snack company Sabritas, struck the front of the bus. The impact caused the truck to overturn and land in a wooded area beside the road, where it caught fire.

One female passenger in the truck became trapped and died in the blaze, while another woman managed to escape. Firefighters and emergency services responded to extinguish the fire and transport the injured to hospitals. Forensic services later removed the deceased victim’s body for an autopsy.

The bus was carrying employees of the Hotel Oasis Akumal. Local news outlet Quintana Roo News identified 14 of the injured workers:

The crash caused significant traffic congestion on the highway, with authorities recommending drivers use alternate routes. Highway officials secured the area to conduct investigations and remove the wrecked vehicles.

Journalist Israel Herrera posted about the incident on social media, stating, “A fatal accident occurred this morning at the height of Akumal, on highway 307. According to information obtained from local authorities there is one woman dead and 16 injured. The accident occurred between a bus and a company van.”
