Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — As part of the launch of Bull Shark Fest 2025, themed "Identity and Conservation," the Playa del Carmen government, led by Mayor Estefanía Mercado, announced an initiative recognizing the bull shark as a symbol of unity, pride, and local identity while reinforcing its role in sustainable tourism.

"The bull shark is not just a tourist attraction—it is a symbol of life, history, and culture that we must proudly protect," stated Estefanía Hernández, Secretary of Tourism. Playa del Carmen is one of the few global destinations where this species can be observed in its natural habitat, particularly between November and March, when pregnant females return annually—a phenomenon documented for over 14 seasons.

Bull Shark Fest 2025: A Celebration of Marine Conservation

During a press conference, officials announced that Bull Shark Fest 2025 will take place on July 19 and 20, marking the start of a series of initiatives promoting marine conservation and regenerative tourism in collaboration with Baalche Proyecto Azul A.C. The free, family-friendly event aims to reshape public perception of sharks, dispel myths, and encourage their protection.

Event Highlights:

  • July 19: Environmental workshops, artistic installations, educational activities for children and youth, and participation by eco-conscious entrepreneurs.
  • July 20: The Sayab Planetarium will host a screening of the mini-documentary Bull Shark, a marine ecosystem photo exhibition, and interactive educational activities.

Karla Gómez, Sustainable Tourism Advisor for the Secretary of Tourism, emphasized the importance of science-backed tourism projects. "The bull shark is part of our identity and vital to marine ecosystem health. Collaboration between communities, scientists, and government is essential," she noted.

Ana Cecilia Gutiérrez, Director of Baalche Proyecto Azul A.C., highlighted the uniqueness of the phenomenon: "The annual return of pregnant bull sharks is a natural wonder exclusive to Playa del Carmen. Approximately 30,000 tourists visit annually to witness these majestic creatures."

Comprehensive Conservation Efforts

The initiative includes a multi-pronged approach to safeguard the bull shark and strengthen its cultural significance:

  • "Changing the Narrative" Campaign: Raises awareness of the shark’s ecological, cultural, and historical value.
  • Promotion as a Local Emblem: Integration into graphic, audiovisual, and institutional branding.
  • Updated 2025 Identification Catalog: Features 25 registered specimens.
  • Children’s Book Publication: Sharks, including a Mayan-language version for rural communities.
  • Audiovisual Outreach: Dissemination of Baalche Proyecto Azul A.C. materials at fairs, events, and in media.
  • Educational Programs: Workshops and trainings on marine conservation and sustainable practices.
  • International Scientific Collaboration: Supports species monitoring and research.

The Secretary of Tourism invites locals and visitors to join Bull Shark Fest 2025, an event celebrating marine life and advancing responsible, sustainable tourism.
