Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The continued development of the Ruta del Mar is reshaping how Playa del Carmen presents itself as a destination, placing marine conservation at the center of its sustainable tourism strategy and positioning the bull shark as a symbol of identity, knowledge, and responsible coexistence with the natural environment.

According to José Urbina Bravo, a dive instructor and cave diver widely regarded as one of the pioneers of bull shark diving in the region, the initiative reflects a significant shift in public perception toward a species that was long stigmatized. Urbina said the change is the result of years of scientific research, environmental education, and community engagement that have helped replace fear with understanding of the bull shark’s essential role in maintaining marine ecosystem balance.

He explained that Ruta del Mar invites both residents and visitors to explore Playa del Carmen through its natural assets—beaches, reefs, and marine life—rather than focusing solely on built infrastructure. This approach, he noted, differentiates the destination from others by emphasizing nature as its greatest value and recognizing that this wealth grows when it is protected and enjoyed responsibly.

Urbina also highlighted the interconnected nature of tourism in the Mexican Caribbean, where jungle, cenotes, and the sea are linked through underground aquifer systems. Within this context, the presence of bull sharks—alongside reefs, rays, and other marine species—represents a natural privilege that has positioned Playa del Carmen as an international example of conservation-driven tourism and environmental stewardship.
